ACTIVE’s Couch-to-5K Mobile App Explodes Out of the Gates in 2013

Now that we are nearly halfway through January, New Year’s Resolutions to get healthy in 2013 are in full swing!

Getting fit is the fifth most popular New Year’s Resolution, according to USA.gov, and many turn to mobile apps to get active on the go.

Exploding out of the gates this year, ACTIVE’s Couch-to-5K running program app has seen a 173% increase in the number of downloads in the first week of January v. the first week of December 2012.

Since we launched the app in August 2011, more than ONE MILLION workouts have been completed…which means that our users have completed roughly as many miles as it would take to run to the moon and back…..four times!

ACTIVE’s Couch-to-5K is one of the top 10 paid apps within the Apple iTunes store Health and Fitness category, and the go-to 5K plan for actress Jamie Lee Curtis (we are seriously stoked about this…learn more below).

I sat down today with our mobile guru, Courtney Ferguson, to chat about all the hubbub.

What does the typical user of ACTIVE’s Couch-to-5K app look like?
Women, between the age of 25 and 50, are by far the most common users of Couch-to-5K. I think it’s because the app is user-friendly, fun and social. Social integration allows you to easily update your progress to Facebook, motivate and share inspiration with our more than 340,000 Couch-to-5K Faceboook community members.

This app is unbelievably popular. In fact, we recently found out that actress Jamie Lee Curtis used our app to successfully complete a 5K! Jamie signed up for the Santa Monica Classic 5K/10K Run to face a lifelong fear and used ACTIVE’s Couch-to-5K to train 30 minutes a day, three times a week for nine weeks to reach her goal.

What is it about the app that people like so much?
It’s fun, it’s easy and it is very targeted for a beginner who wants to get more active. Most importantly, it works. This app has changed people’s lives by helping hundreds of thousands of people get off the couch and onto the roads.

For many, this app is the first time they have committed to a plan, accomplished a goal and crossed a finish line. Crossing that line is something to celebrate and a wonderful feeling for the user. For example, these are real Facebook post about C25k:

What are some of the more popular updates to the app?
We are always updating the app with new enhancements, functionality or improving performance. Last October, we added a Zombie trainer named Johnny Dead, who is quite entertaining.

It was a little bit of a challenge to develop his script, as zombies don’t usually speak! We tried to think of funny, motivational mantras, like “Mm, I can taste the sweat….from your brain!” or “Joggy jog, it’s jog time.” It makes the workout fun and helps motivate you to push harder, further and longer. Probably my favorite saying is “Chicken wings, I used to eat those. Now I just eat brains.”

How can you not be motivated to run when you are being chased by a brain slurping member of the undead?!?
