Parks & Rec Month: A Celebration of Play

What’s not to love about a celebration of play? At its heart, that’s what Parks and Recreation Month is all about, both here (in July) and for our neighbors to the north (now!).

Canada

This month, our friends in Canada are celebrating the many benefits of parks and recreation in conjunction with the country’s sesquicentennial, otherwise known as its 150th birthday! Happy birthday, Canada!

United States

In the United States, July is Parks and Recreation Month with a theme of Get Your Play On! We’re excited to support our customers in showing your community members the importance of play and how much they can discover at their local parks and rec.

Great Stories from Around the World

We love celebrating Parks and Recs and the great ways they serve their communities.

Pop-up Park. “Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation aims to get South Dakota residents and visitors active by installing a temporary, pop-up park on Phillips Avenue Plaza. Artist Jason Folkerts will draw sidewalk caricatures of children participating in summer as planters will transform the concrete, urban area into a green space.

‘If you can’t get to a park, we will bring a park to you,’ said Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation recreation program coordinator, Susie Garry.”1

Fee-Free 80’s Play Day. In 2015, The Deering Estate in Florida celebrated 30 years of Park and Recreation Month (established in 1985) by throwing it back to the 80’s with their favorite 80’s attire and accessories and welcoming over 1,700 visitors on their fee-free play day.2
